When testing is the right step
If you are looking for someone to help you clarify your child’s diagnosis and mental health needs, psychological testing is exactly what you are looking for. Conducting an assessment can also identify your child’s strengths, abilities and limitations. Call to consult about how our psychologists may be of assistance to you.
Families usually come to testing when:
- School has raised a concern and everyone is guessing at the cause
- Attention, learning or behavior problems are not responding to the usual supports
- Two providers have given two different explanations
- A formal report is needed to request services or accommodations
What the process involves
Testing starts with a consultation, so we can be sure an assessment will actually answer your question. From there it typically involves a clinical interview with you, standardized testing sessions with your child, input from school or other caregivers where you approve it, scoring and interpretation, and then a feedback meeting where we explain the findings in plain language. You receive a written report you can share with the people who need it.
What you get out of it
A clearer picture than a checklist can give: what is going on, what is not going on, what your child is good at, and what specifically would help. That last part matters most. A diagnosis without recommendations does not change a Tuesday morning.
Testing is quoted separately
Assessment is priced by scope, not by the standard session rate, because the hours vary with what is being asked. Call the office for a quote before you plan around a number.

Questions people ask us
How is testing different from therapy?
Therapy is treatment over time. Testing is a defined project that answers a question, produces a written report, and then ends. Some families do testing first and therapy after, and some only need one of the two.
How long does an evaluation take?
It depends on the referral question and the number of measures involved. The consultation call is where we scope it, and we will tell you the number of appointments and the turnaround for the report before you commit.
Will the school accept the report?
A private psychological evaluation is commonly used to inform school planning, though a district runs its own process for eligibility decisions. Tell us at the consultation that school documentation is the goal, so the report is written to be useful there.
Do you test adults?
Our testing work focuses on children and adolescents. Call and describe what you need and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right practice or refer you on.
